Introduction

Virtual reality (VR) refers to the technology that allows users to indirectly experience situations that cannot be experienced in reality due to spatial and physical constraints by creating imaginative spaces and objects in the virtual world using the computer and allowing interactions with that world through the five senses such as sight, hearing, and touch. It provides an immersive experience without any distinction between the real world and the virtual world by creating virtual spaces with a combination of real-life objects and graphics. By applying various types of frontier technology such as hologram, positioning, motion sensing, mobile mixed reality (MR), etc. to the target content and environment such as traditional education, exhibition, broadcasting, entertainment, theme park, etc., it is possible to create new content for various experiences or virtual simulations, which is why the value of VR is limitless.

VR content refers to content that provides users with an opportunity to experience realistic situations and environments in the virtual world using VR technology. Although the industry has mainly grown based on the entertainment market such as movies and games, it is expanding into education and training with the recent boom of the e-learning market. In the future, industries that apply VR to create VR experiences or interactive technology are expected to undergo rapid growth.

Department Characteristics

  1. 1The one and only professional education program in Korea that is in operation in connection with global partners with the world’s best VR and AR technology
  2. 2Allow students to acquire global certification after completing EON Reality’s VR and AR education program
  3. 3Provide practice-oriented education with students directly participating in industry-university cooperation projects
  4. 4Offer scholarships and provide students participating in projects with wages
  5. 5Provide an educational environment in which high-tech VR/AR equipment and VR/AR production rooms can be used by students anytime
  6. 6Graduates can find employment at a VR/AR-related company or pursue a doctoral degree

Educational Objectives

Foster core talents for the IT industry with strong practical skills and global competence

  • Implement a professional practical education system to lead the cultural content industry with a curriculum aimed at fostering professionals who can produce high-tech video content and develop software based on VR/AR technology
  • Cultivate manpower with exceptional competency by providing hardware and software education through companies that need related manpower (Eon Reality, etc.) and conducting classes based on global projects
  • Create opportunities for new content development and convergence between various products, industrial environments, and services by producing manpower capable of expanding the VR-based high-tech video content industry in the era of smart IT
  • Successfully conduct customized industry-university cooperation projects, cultivate field application and utilization skills through internship programs, offer training at home and abroad (Singapore, Manchester, etc.), and run a capstone design program

Program Characteristics

The specializations offered by the department are 3D Image Processing and 3D UX Design, so students can hone a wide range of abilities in their field of major in VR and AR. 3D Image Processing is an engineering major, focusing on the ability to develop VR and AR contents based on computer graphics theories and programming skills, while 3D UX Design is a design major that cultivates students’ competency in 3D graphic design, modeling, image synthesis and so on so as to be able to develop VR and AR content through design.

Students will be able to gain comprehensive knowledge and skills beyond their field of specialization through integrated courses and projects in the convergence-oriented curriculum.

  • 3D Image Processing

Focuses the computer graphics engineering-based VR/AR technology, knowledge, and operational capabilities such as 3D graphic image processing technology, context recognition, operation, programming, etc. applied to create user experiences in a virtual space using a computer and cultivates the ability to develop a wide range of content and services using VR and AR technology by integrating information from various fields such as broadcasting, communication, medical care, architecture, geography, industrial management, education, entertainment and the Internet and experiences through the senses such as sight, hearing and touch

  • 3D UX Design

When a user directly or indirectly uses systems, products and services through VR/AR interfaces, the user experience must be maximized. To this end, students are given opportunities to hone their skills in creating and implementing designs in consideration of user experience (UX) based on HCI for optimal reactions between the user and the objects they interact with and are trained to be able to create and implement advanced digital graphics designs for application to VR/AR content and services based on 3D modeling, rendering, special image synthesis, etc.

Namseoul University has signed an agreement with EON Reality in the United States to conduct education and projects to nurture VR/AR professionals and introduce related infrastructure.
The NSU Advanced Digital Virtual and Augmented Reality Center was established in March 2014.

EON Reality, headquartered in Irvine, USA, has 10 subsidiaries, 11 interactive digital centers, and 25 showrooms worldwide, including California, USA; Manchester, UK; Singapore; Gothenburg, Sweden; Melbourne, Australia; Clermont-Ferrand, France; Oman; and Italy. As a leading VR technology developer and provider, the company has clients in the Silicon Valley and Hollywood and supplies to Boeing, Exxon Mobil, Intel, Lexus, Samsung, Siemens Medical, Suzuki, Toyota, Whirlpool, Tobyhanna Army Depot, and more. It also has education and training institutes at 300 locations including Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue University, University of Miami, Imperial College in England, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and more. The NSU Advanced Digital Virtual and Augmented Reality Center has adopted the hardware and software necessary for the production of content using virtual and augmented reality technology and is staffed with professors who are experts in the field. It has also adopted a curriculum identical to that of entrepreneur schools in Manchester, UK and elsewhere to provide effective and systematic education. Also in cooperation with EON Global and EON Korea, the NSU Advanced Digital Virtual and Augmented Reality Center has set up various programs to help students build professional competency, provide support for employment and start-ups, and cultivate global competence through international joint projects, overseas field trips, internship opportunities, entrepreneurship and content incubation support. The Department of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Studies of NSU Graduate School provides education using VR and interactive 3D technology from EON Reality to foster professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to produce high value-added works in the areas of VR/AR-based 3D simulation, education and industry and design and develop edutainment application programs. By doing so, the department hopes to contribute to the advancement of the local IT industry.
