Introduction

The department trains students into child counseling and psychotherapy experts with research capabilities for the development of child welfare.

  • A child counselor and psychotherapist training program to help solve the psychological difficulties faced by children that are rooted in various causes and to help children undergo holistic development
  • Fostering child counselors and psychotherapists with the knowledge and practical skills required by child counseling institutions, etc.

Educational Objectives

The education objective of the department is to foster experts who can promote mental health by diagnosing the psychological state of children and their families experiencing psychological issues, based on various theories and practical techniques (sandplay therapy, play therapy, family therapy, etc.) applied in counseling and psychotherapy, and providing counseling and therapy for development of mental health. In order to achieve this objective, the department not only makes sure that students gain an understanding of various approaches that can be applied in the fields of individual counseling, psychotherapy, group therapy, and counseling education but also impart multidisciplinary skills to explore from psychological, ecological, educational, sociological, familial and medical perspectives for healthy development of children and their families.

Program Characteristics

This Child Counseling and Psychotherapy Specialization Program helps cultivate the skills to carry out research on theories and techniques applicable to child counseling and child psychotherapy for the development of child welfare and imparts the qualities required of child counselors and psychotherapists to help children experiencing psychosocial issues.
Through various exercises and discussions, students get to share ideas and information, while through clinical training, students gain clinical counseling and research skills. In-depth clinical training is provided through the NSU Child and Family Counseling Center and the Korea Behavior Analysis Research Center, which are equipped with outstanding facilities and training systems.

  • 1A 2-year (4-term) master’s degree program and a 3-year (6-term) doctoral program; with thesis/dissertation guidance provided in the 3rd and 4th terms and an internship program offered for 2 terms (internship at the NSU counseling center and research center)
  • 2Cultivating fundamental qualifications as counselors and psychotherapists based on theoretical education on child counseling and in-depth learning (by mainly focusing on play and sandplay therapy)
  • 3Providing a platform for effective application of theories related to child counseling and fostering practical skills required of counselors and psychotherapists based on prior experience in therapy situations
  • 4Training students into professional therapists through systematic and continuous supervision by counseling and psychotherapy experts
  • 5Helping students build rich and practical knowledge through small-group academic research with full-time professors and senior counselors and promote ongoing exchanges
  • 6Training professional manpower in psychotherapy through cooperation with international clinical institutions, case studies, and academic conferences for students to acquire advanced theories in the field of counseling and psychotherapy
