Introduction

Biomedical Laboratory Science is an applied multidisciplinary discipline that integrates medicine and life sciences, and research and development (R&D) is carried out on diagnostic technology using various biological samples to develop advanced therapeutic techniques. In the Biomedical Laboratory Science Specialization Program, students are cultivated into creative and innovative medical scientists with world-class competitiveness, advanced knowledge and ability to apply cutting-edge technology, based on courses focusing on academic theories and providing opportunities for new academic exchanges. Students also read and study the latest research papers to better understand the latest trends in their field of study, while at the same time honing the ability to criticize the research process and results.

In addition, students become equipped with scientific thinking skills as well as basic and applied knowledge to related to their major, based on which they develop problem-solving skills, the ability to raise issues, and seek solutions in a creative manner. By doing so, they become armed with the knowledge and skills to serve as leaders in the academic and industrial worlds.

  • Nurturing Biomedical Laboratory Science who will take on leadership roles and conduct academic research in health care-related fields
  • First in the country to offer a 2-year master’s degree program in Biomedical Laboratory Science for those with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science
  • Developing global talents through an industry-academia-research graduate school education system
  • Providing education oriented toward clinical practitioners
  • Implementing programs that promote research activities through the establishment and operation of a molecular diagnostics research center
  • Offering scholarships such as academic scholarships and exempting those who have completed the undergraduate program at NSU or the credit bank system from paying admission fees
  • Developing global talents through an in-depth Biomedical Laboratory Science specialization program
  • Establishing infrastructure through active exchanges with related research institutions at home and abroad
  • First in Korea to offer a master’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science to impart advanced knowledge
  • Allowed students who are first authors to present their papers at domestic and international conferences (self-directed research activities)

Educational Objectives

  • The department aims to cultivate creative and innovative talents with world-class competitiveness who are capable of carrying out R&D on diagnostic technology and developing them for real-life applications.
  • The department offers a specialization program focusing on the learning objectives necessary to improve the quality and efficiency of related services in hospitals and on content that requires ongoing education. This is to improve individual students’ abilities and turn them into competent medical life scientists in Korea.
  • Biomedical Laboratory Science is a cutting-edge, future-oriented discipline that combines medicine and life science. The department conducts R&D on diagnostic and treatment technology based on the understanding of phenomena related to human life and is endeavoring to train professionals who can play a leading role in health and welfare promotion, complementary and alternative medicine, biotechnology (BT), and the bio industry in the 21st century.
  • Students gain an understanding of the mechanism of diagnosing human diseases and related methods and apply it to basic life sciences and clinical sciences. They also get to comprehend the techniques and principles of Biomedical Laboratory Science that can be used in complementary and alternative medicine and the bio industry.
  • By providing specialized training in Biomedical Laboratory Science, the department helps students gain the skills to apply the latest clinical testing/examination technology that is fast and accurate and develop outstanding research capabilities in the field of medical life science. Not only that, students are educated to understand the applications of their study and become a key player in the fields of Biomedical Laboratory Science, diagnostic medicine, and health care by developing genetic diagnostic methods, diagnostic kits and biohealth materials.

Program Characteristics

  • 1Producing experts with master’s and doctoral degrees who can enter new diagnostic areas

Through specialization of courses regarding the latest diagnostics, the department aims to create new specialization areas by producing researchers who can provide support for national growth and development by introducing next-generation medical technology. For example, in the field of molecular pathology and molecular diagnostics, where new diagnostic techniques are being developed, R&D on diagnostic methods and rapid tests allows such researchers to advance into other fields such as new drug development and bioengineering. In addition, in the field of stem cytology, which is garnering attention as a next-generation biotechnology, research can be carried out on differentiation or canceration in order to advance into fields such as bio drug development and safety evaluation. Not only that, in the field of obstetrics and gynecological diagnosis and fertility procedures, professional manpower is required for cytogenetic diagnosis (karyotype analysis, genetic diseases, chromosomal disorder), congenital anomaly screening test, metabolic disease diagnosis of newborns, sperm test, etc. Thus, the department is endeavoring to produce professional manpower for this particular field by maximizing the strengths of those with a degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science

  • 2The department carries out field-oriented research by forming a network with experts and related hospitals and research institutes and conducts programs to cultivate experts in Biomedical Laboratory Science diagnosis. In addition, in addition to engaging in exchanges with international societies, the department helps students acquire international qualification certificates related to Biomedical Laboratory Science and invites foreign experts to provide specialized training for graduate students.
