Thesis Review Method

  • Number of reviews : In principle, the master’s thesis will be reviewed at least twice and the doctoral dissertation will be reviewed at least four times (including the preliminary review). In principle, a public thesis/dissertation presentation will be held at least once under the responsibility of the chair of the review committee.
  • Composition of the review committee : The committee for the master’s thesis shall consist of three members including the advisor, and for the doctoral dissertation, the committee shall consist of five members including external reviewers (one or more, but no more than two) and the advisor.
  • Pass/Fail decision : The thesis will be evaluated as "Pass" or "Fai" by each of the committee members. Pass/Fail requires the approval of at least 2/3 of the committee members for the master’s degree, and at least 4/5 of the committee members for the doctoral degree.
  • Payment of advising fee and reviewing fee
  • Final submission of thesis : Master's students must submit four copies of the completed thesis, and doctoral students must submit four copies of the completed dissertation, along with one copy of the thesis/dissertation title change form (if the title of the final copy is different from the title in the research plan) to the Graduate School Office by the specified deadline.

  1. 1A preliminary examination must be conducted at least once under the responsibility of each department head or the chair of the reviewing committee.
  2. 2A dissertation can only be reviewed if it has been published (or considered as a candidate for publication) in an academic journal after entering graduate school.

Students enrolled after 2016

Doctoral dissertations must meet at least 200% of the criteria set forth in Table 1 (all departments) and Table 2 (Department of the Fine Arts) (including at least 70% of the national or international criteria) to proceed to the main review. Only papers published after admission will be accepted, and only papers with the author's affiliation recorded as "Namseoul University Graduate School, Student of the Doctoral Program, (Name of the Student)" will be accepted.

If the academic journal paper publication standards set forth in the school regulations/rules are not met, the final degree award ( graduation ) cannot be granted. This is a table of the criteria for the Department of Fine Arts for doctoral degrees for all students admitted after the 2016 academic year.

Students enrolled after 2021

Doctoral dissertations must meet at least 100% of the publication results to proceed to the main review. Only papers published after admission will be accepted, and only papers with the author's affiliation recorded as "Namseoul University Graduate School, Student of the Doctoral Program, (Name of the Student)" will be accepted. The thesis performance shall be recognized according to the joint research achievement recognition rate of the Faculty Performance Evaluation Regulations.

※ If the academic journal paper publication standards set forth in the school regulations/rules are not met, the degree will not be awarded (graduation not possible)
※ For international students, if the paper is listed in or published in a journal of a research foundation of their country, it will be reviewed by the Graduate School Management Committee. Then, if acknowledged by the committee, the ratio of recognition for publication in a journal or being a candidate for publication on the National Research Foundation of Korea may be applied.
