Introduction

Among building materials, ceramics have a close relationship with life and exist in various forms depending on the environment, as they have undergone development along the improvement of aesthetics and changes in people’s lifestyles. The ceramic industry, in particular, arose much earlier than those of other materials such as metals and plastics, and ceramics are just artifacts from the past, like stoneware and bronze ware, as they have developed over the course of human history to this day.

In modern times, there is social consensus regarding the importance of using eco-friendly construction materials in residential and commercial spaces. In response, the department conducts research on the relationship between spaces and objects to enrich people’s lives and on ceramics, which are widely used as materials for sculptures and buildings in modern society, based on artistry for psychological and cultural enhancement. Further, students become equipped with the skills to develop eco-friendly materials and implement spatial planning and design by incorporating wood, metal, plastic, and resin with ceramics.

Educational Objectives

Architectural Ceramics Design is a specialization program that fosters capabilities for new material design development and spatial planning by incorporating various materials with ceramics used as interior and exterior materials for architecture.
Today, with the world becoming a single market where only the best products and technologies survive through the best marketing campaigns, it is necessary to develop high value-added products based on exceptional technology and design. For those wishing to develop internationally competitive building materials, university education, which allows them to study building materials and practice designing products, is a must.

As the world’s only and Korea’s first department of its kind, the Department of Architectural Ceramics Design at Namseoul University is dedicated to fostering professional architectural ceramics designers capable of developing ceramic products used in building interior and exterior by grafting eco-friendly materials, based on an in-depth understanding of clay, and plan spatial designs using the developed ceramic products.
